CAI Plant Explosion
A factory owned by CAI, Inc. in Danvers, Massachusetts, was rocked by multiple explosions in November 2006. Witnesses described hearing a loud boom shortly before 3 a.m., followed by a mushroom cloud that hung over Danvers for hours. The impact of the blast from the explosion of the plant could be felt at last 20 miles away. At least 10 people were injured during the explosion, and 90 homes were damaged. Utilities were shut off in the nearby community, and schools were closed for the day.
The CAI plant manufactures inks and solvents. Preliminary air quality tests registered low levels of the solvent toluene, but no immediate dangers. Runoff from water used to fight the fires left a purplish slick on the surface of a nearby river.
